This Soleil Babinet Compensator is basically a zero order wave plate with variable retardation.
Through a manual adjustment one may select a uniform phase difference between the e- and
o-rays of 0 to 2π. As a result, incident elliptically or circularly polarized light can be converted to
linearly polarized light by introducing the appropriate compensation. From readings obtained,
a complete analysis of the state of polarization of this is also true, that is , any desired
polarization form can be obtained by pre-setting the appropriate values on the instrument.
